People In Music History
Borodin, Alexander [Porphyrevich] (1833-1887) Russian composer -- also
professor of chemistry, so could spare little time for music. Illegitimate son
of a prince; pupil of Balakirev; one of the "nationalist" group of composers
known as the mighty handful. Works include opera Prince Igor (unfinished;
completed by Rimsky-Korsakov and Glazunov), which includes the Polovetsian
Dances; 3 symphonies (no. 3 unfinished, but 2 movements of it advanced enough
to be completed by Glazunov); symphonic poem In the Steppes of Central Asia; 2
string quartets; songs.
